Title: Is RWL immortal?
Post by: The Lady Shael on July 28, 2011, 09:59:27 AM
How much longer do you think RWL will still be active?

Almost 9 years ago, even the creator of RWL said he didn't think RWL would last beyond one year. Even today, it seems people are still surprised that we're still stubbornly chugging along, despite the death of the Redwall and Promisance communities. we can't help it, we're just so awesome

So basically, I don't think anything surprises me anymore. Thank you RWL for being the way you are. :)

i voted 3-5 years as i think a lot of people will grow out or find other commitments but other than that there is no other reason it wont live forever, RWL FOREVER!

I think 3-5 years. Lots of us are going to be getting to the actual adulthood stage of our lives in that time.

I'd like to say forever, but unless the site gets passed onto the next generation I'm not sure people will be interested in the site 5-10 years down the line, or rather be interested and able+willing to develop, code, balance and pay for it.

Well you old people (lol) are going to lose your pride if you keep playing but you old people tend to know a lot of people with younger kids so why not try to introduce them to this

Forums are out of style. It's all about the status updates and liking and commenting now.

Title: Re: Is RWL immortal?

Yeah, it's all about pointless status updates and fake friends. Some people on social networks have 600 friends and post a new status every hour-sometimes more.

One person annoyed me so much I removed her, lol. I only keep 200friends or so, and even then realistically only about 20-30 would be proper irl friends where as others are people I know from RWL (well, I guess some of them are kind of friends like Blood Wake) people I just know from school.

The only forums that seem very active at the moment are gamer forums. Probably for a mulititude of reasons.

But yes, there is a nice gathering of ingame members such as all of Hares...people like Vulpes Jarr, for example. I suppose they use the lounge and clan forums instead of these forums.

Yeah, the Lounge finally seems to be taking on a life of its own. Much like Spa and the Box of Shouts. :) It is a shame they don't frequent the forums though. For some reason I don't consider people fully integrated into the RWL community until they post frequently on the forums.

On the note of people liking social networks, it is possible to integrate features of social networking into forums. Stuff like comments on your page, groups with their own mini-forums (eg. fans of RWL and Warrior cats). Other features you can add include being able to upload albums, make statuses (which can be liked) and on a similar note I suppose reputation system is similar to liking too. Stuff like messaging is also made more similar to a chat as with social networks.

This is all probably quite dificult and time-consuming to code, though, and would probably have to be developed independently instead of powred by SMF or whatever. It's definetly possible though-a good example is Bioware Social Network. (yes, I'm a Bioware fanboy)

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/index (http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/index)

I'm not sure if making the forums eventually like that is a possibility or too dificult, I'm just throwing out an idea.

sounds like a good idea if we could get a like feature and also the photo album integrated into the actual forums.

dislike the whole social network forum merge idea, just me though.

As for RWL's lifespan, I think it could go on for a longtime, newer players are coming to the game (and some are staying)

I suppose some older players might leave, but if Volky is anything to go by, they'll hang around . . . at least a little

The torch of RWL has already been passed on a few times now.

Boze started it.

He left it to Ragefur, Retto, and Stormclaw.

Retto stayed, and soon brought Shael into the fold. Then, there was Peace and Wolf Bite and windy and stuff.

The game has never rested on a single person. (Although it feels like Shael has been holding everything together since almost the dawn of time.) So I think it can survive as long as it still has a member base, and I don't see that disappearing. The game is more active than it's been in years, we've outlived nearly all of the other proms. Brian Jacques might have died, but I'm optimistic the resurgence in the community will last.

Really, if RWL was going to die when the current staff became adults, it would have happened already. Most of us have jobs and partners and bills to pay, but we're still keen to burn 450 turns every 3 days.

I think RWL /definitely/ has a future beyond the next 3-5 years, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it develops.

From what I hear, boze, retto and stormclaw all knew each other really well-in real life iirc.

Plus, RWL's only really originally developed under retto from what I can tell, originally it was just a QMT copy with some different values. Plus, the site did nearly go down with retto from what WB says. Also, the game had a bigger community when most the developers joined up.

I'm not saying it wont last forever (I hope it does) but I'll just be a little cautious.
Title: Re: Is RWL immortal?

Are we allowed to be honest about Retto these days or is he still in that weird "we remember him for what we wanted him to be rather than what he was" zone?

As Matt said, RWL has persisted on the will of Shael and almost nothing else.

Nostalgia plays a bigger role as time goes on too, which is what keeps a lot of us around I would imagine. If Volkov and Holby weren't around I would have nothing to come around for. Even though I am not as involved with them as I once was here and elsewhere, it is fun to remember.

---

Before anyone asks, I was the guy who voted 1-2 years. I misunderstood the question.

Yes, this question can be misunderstood.

I'm sure Boze et al knew each other as members of the ROC, but I wasn't aware that it was an IRL thing.

The original game was just QMT with the names changed, I don't think any values were different. Retto did a fair bit of development in the beginning, but the changes weren't overly drastic, bar the attacking system. After BAXX was released, Retto ceased to do pretty much anything until he left. Which meant there were about three years where the game didn't change at all.

Obviously the game had a bigger community in the first year. There was a huge ROC crowd, and the game's newness drew people. I don't think it's fair to compare 2002-2003 to now, though. Since you've been here, though, (2007ish?) numbers have grown.

Awww. I can't help it, I really enjoy it. :) My family and friends don't understand it, and sometimes even I don't. But I know it makes me happy to see you guys having fun and making friends, so that's what keeps me going.

And I agree with Holbs, if we were going to go inactive due to us being "adults", it would have already happened. I remember thinking about the future 6 years ago, wondering if RWL would still be around. I figured I'd post a bit in college, but it would slowly phase out and I would stop being active after I graduated. Definitely didn't happen. Every so often I'll see people making friends, learning something new, maturing/growing up a little, and moments like that make being a staff member here very rewarding. As long as I keep seeing that in the community, I'll still be here trying to keep it going. :)

Okay, enough about that, might start tearing up.

We can say what we want about him as long as we're still respectful of all the time and effort he put into his projects. He helped RWL become more than just a promisance, but he wasn't the best administrator. Definitely would have helped if he hadn't ditched an active community without saying a word or passing it down to someone else.

I see how it is.

Also, this'll pretty much be around as long as Shael wants it to be. Ollie has the domain and hosting under his name and pays the 7 dollars a month for hosting or whatever, but I know that windy regularly backs up the forums, and I'm assuming that Shael has a local version of the game source (and [redacted] does too, probably)...What this means is that it'll never go away until Shael wants it to. Or gets drunk and deletes everything. This is my current task.

Boze/Stormclaw were RL friends, this I recall quite vividly. Retto I'm not so sure, I think he might have been, but I have no recollection of this. I think I had this conversation with Firetooth once, but I might have said Retto too at that point, but the more I think about it, it was just Boze/Stormclaw.
