What is with all the spambot-sounding account names?

There will be no theme this round, but we will be testing a significant market change. Here are the changes:

-items on market can no longer be removed
-items on market are in separate packages (no longer joined to those with same type and price)

-after a market package has been on the market for 48 hours, it will sell at merc prices

[Shael's Diplomacy Workshop]

Hello, and welcome everyone. Glad to see you're here. :)

I will be holding a short series of workshops on the topic of diplomacy when playing RWL. I'll start by saying I am by no means an expert at the game, and merely to take what I say as guidance. But when I did play, diplomacy was my only reliable strategy, and it worked well for me (became Empress without any skill, didn't I? :p). I have also had years of experience now admin-ing the game, reading players' in-game messages and clan forums, watching diplomacy blossom and wither and repeat in real time.

Feel free to take notes, if I'm feeling especially benevolent at the end there may be a quiz. =D

So, most of you have probably been playing this game for years. Feel free to jump in at any time to share any additional comments you may have, or perhaps share a story from personal experience.

When playing RWL, or any internet game - or any game in general - it is imperative to remember, "this is only a game". It can be easy to be sucked into the excitement and drama and action, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. After all, we encourage it through role-playing. But there is a line, and it's important to know when that line is crossed.

Every player you interact with on the game is a real person. That person has a real life (in most cases), and feelings. They also can't see inside your brain. An action you may consider to be "out-of-line", they might see it as simply playing the game. A death threat you receive from them might simply be an attempt at role-play, but maybe you take it personally. I see these situations happen all too often, and it just comes down to misunderstanding, and it's almost always because one or both people are taking the game too seriously.

What should you do if someone sacks/murders you 84 times, or sends you a message saying, "u r so dead rite now u freaking jerk"? Let's take a poll:

Should you:

A. Cry to yourself and delete account
B. Let your rage explode in retaliation by stomping the person into the ground, or sending a profanity-laden reply
C. Before you take any action, remind yourself this is only a game



I hope most of you answered C!

So after you've calmed down and ensured you have a firm stance in reality, what should you do? This depends on the kind of person you are, really, I've seen a whole spectrum of responses. Some people have learned to ignore it, or vent to a friend/clanmate rather than facing the person directly. Some people will send a playfully taunting message back. Other people go with the non-overreactive but obviously offended "Dude, what's with the sacks?!" It's important to use a little foresight when making a response and think how that person might handle your response. The last thing you want to do is make the other person so upset they leave the game (otherwise you will be Emperor of nothing).

More details on dealing with confrontation will be discussed in Session Three - Dealing with Confrontation.

Of course, it's important not to use "this is just a game" as a free pass to do whatever you want. Warlord Ethics still apply. Every player has their own set of ethics, and it's not the same as yours. You might think 15 murders is simply using the features offered to you in the game, but your victim probably considers it as an act of war. When they send that "D:" message to you, it wouldn't be right to pull out the "this is a game" card. Only pull out that card if you think their response was unnecessarily hostile, completely out of line and out of character.

We have all sorts of players at RWL. Yes, most of them are teenage males. But due to our Redwall-themed background, we have a significant amount of females (who always seem to want to stay hidden), and pre-teens as well. Some of you may remember the little fiasco we had a while ago, where a vet unintentionally chased away a new member by sending a hostile message. Misunderstandings happen, sometimes you have to give the other person a second chance, or word your messages carefully if you don't know how the other person may react.

So, yes, this is a game. But if you ask anyone who has been here for 6+ years, they will tell you what kept them here is not the gameplay, but the community and friendships. Many other promisances have died out simply because they didn't value the feeling of community as much as we do. Basically, don't compromise your friendships over a misunderstanding that happened in-game. This game is not worth taking seriously. I could make someone Emperor with the click of a button if I wanted to. I could delete the game in the next five minutes if I felt like it. All that work, all that networth, down the drain. Friendships, however, are a much more substantial thing, and it's the reason all of you are here now (not the amount of networth you got in that round 10 months ago kthnx).

Friends and allies are not the same thing. Friends can backstab each other in-game, and laugh about it on the forums, or even send a simple message like "Oh, I see how it is. Traitor :p". Once someone backstabs an ally, it's pretty safe to say they're not allies anymore, but "ally" is more of just an in-game title.

I also want to make it clear that we're not trying to force you to swallow your pride, force you to make friends, or not to get too attached to the game. The end goal has always been to make this a fun environment for everyone. Once you stumble out of character and start acting out in a big way at someone else because you're genuinely upset, it stops being fun for you and the player(s) who have to listen to you whine. That is exactly what we want to avoid. You can still be confrontational without being whiny or abusive, and you can still retaliate without being genuinely hateful and hostile.

So what did we learn? Let's go over this together:


DO NOT DO THESE THINGS:
-send anyone profane, hostile death threats (this can also get you disabled)
-take your anger out of that server (that's admitting you lost)
-throw tantrums and blame everyone else for your lack of skill (sometimes you gotta be the bigger person and take the fall)
-send hostile messages to potentially new players who don't know any better (or suffer the wrathful glare of Shael)
-take anything that happens in-game personally and consider it as a hate crime against yourself (unless they pulled a "your momma" joke... you're on your own there)


Consider, instead, the following:
-if you feel upset, take 5 minutes and do something else. Come back when you have a clear head
-give the person a second chance, if this is your first run-in with them
-give the person a chance to explain themselves
-warlord up and retaliate instead of threatening or whining (but retaliate honorably)


This ends the session. You may now break into small groups and discuss. What is your stance on the points above? What stories can you share from personal experience? What other advice can you offer to players who have trouble with not taking things seriously?

P.S. I think this is the first clan leader voting round where we had landslide victories across the board!

So I've noticed most of you deliberately moved to Sampetra....which I take to mean that the Emperor tax isn't high enough. XD

Just wondering what your opinions are of the Emperor tax and any other suggestions you might have for it. Right now the tax takes 0.02% of your total food and total cash per turn.

What does the Spa Room mean to you?

Let us all congratulate Shadow on being promoted to RWL Admin! :) He will be taking Peace's place as in-game admin as well be in charge of game development decisions (which he has kinda been doing already :p).

Peace Alliance will still be an admin in the background, and he will be around if we have any server issues or if we need any new CSS layouts.

Remember the last Storehouse round I gave out some Admin Awards? We're doing it again this round. :)

Some criteria is changing a bit:


Outstanding Newbie - a player who has played for 0-6 months, who demonstrates eagerness to learn, gets along well with clan members, and proves their skill in the game

Emerging Veteran - a player who has been around from 0-3 years, who has demonstrated exceptional skill in the game and has gained the respect of their peers for being an extremely capable player/opponent.

Legendary Veteran - a veteran player (someone who has played for 3 years or more) who demonstrates exemplary leadership (but not necessarily the clan leader), playing skill, helpfulness, and modesty

Best Team Player - this round is all about team play. This award will go to the player who best rallies their clan to work together and does everything they can to make sure no one is left behind. Does not necessarily have to be a vet or clan leader.

Most Skilled Player - the player who best demonstrates their versatility and knowledge about how to play the game. Talking about your skill isn't sufficient...you need to prove it.

Admin's Award - a player who didn't quite fit any of the categories above but deserves recognition for their achievements this round


These awards will be announced on the last day of the round (September 28th).

I've had my current laptop (HP pavilion dv4) for about 2 years now, and I admit I don't really take good care of it. In college I never turned it off and I always use it in my bed and stuff. So now it's overheating pretty bad (to the point where I was actually concerned it was a fire hazard) and being really slow...and it just starts failing when I unplug it from the charger.

I used a can of compressed air to try to clear some of the dust out of the vent, but I think the only way to really clean it is to take apart the whole laptop. I found a video and tutorials instructing how to take apart the laptop but I don't really feel comfortable doing that since I really can't afford to break something in the process and not have a working laptop.

This is mostly aimed at windy and Neo, but I'm interested to know if anyone else has some advice as well. I'm trying to decide if it's worth investing the time into fixing it, or if I should just get a new one (and if I do, which laptop should I get).

[Pearl Holder location:]

Here are the gameplay and feature details for the round, coming up tonight. =) Reply here if you have any questions.



Pearl Holder location:
This location has a 2.00 bonus for all location stats. Only one clan can be in this location at a time. To get to this location,  you must kill the land farm account "Tears of All Oceans". Once you kill the land farm, your whole clan is automatically moved to "Pearl Holder". You can't move to any other location (but why would you want to? =p). You can stay in this location as long as you like, until another clan kills the land farm Tears of All Oceans (which is reborn again with 10,000 land). You can drop land to the land farm (only if you are in the Pearl Holder location) to prevent it from being killed.

When a clan kills the land farm, whatever clan currently holds the pearls will be forced out of Pearl Holder, into either Sampetra or Mossflower, depending on their clan.

Sampetra location:
Sampetra is an island off of the coast of Mossflower. It is most well-known for being the home of the Emperor Ublaz Madeyes. This island has high bonuses (not as high as Pearl Holder), but these bonuses come with a price: every time you use turns in Sampetra, you pay a very small tax to Ublaz in the form of cash and food (0.02% of your total cash and food, per turn!).

Emperor Ublaz Madeyes:
An emperor account with much resources and land. Ublaz is the ruler of the island of Sampetra. You can attack him and use other leader missions on him, and he CAN be killed.

Once he is killed, the person who killed him becomes the Emperor of Sampetra, and earns the tax of the Sampetra location, which can be set between 0-0.02%. Once the player becomes the Emperor, they have "Emperor" put in front of their name (will be done manually), they are removed from their clan (can no longer join or create clans) and they can't move to any other location (including Pearl Holder).

If you become Emperor, you will have access to a top secret page: Throne Room. There, you can set the value of the tax (can be from 0% to 0.02% per turn), or send a mass-message to everyone in the game. You can still be killed though, and if you are, then the person who kills you will take your place as the Emperor of Sampetra.

Killing Ublaz and becoming Emperor is NOT the main focus of the game...the main focus should be trying to steal the pearls and protecting them from the other clans. But it will certainly make things interesting. =)

Clans:
There are four clans: Ublaz's Army, Trident Guard, Corsairs, and Woodlanders. Ublaz's Army and Trident Guard start out on Sampetra (tax still applies in protection), and Corsairs and Woodlanders start out in Mossflower. You cannot leave your clan (unless you become Emperor). In the first week of the game, all the clan members can vote for a clan leader, and after exactly one week, whoever has the most votes will become the leader of that clan. The clan leader will have all the normal clan administration options (except to boot people from the clan and change clan name and tag).

Lizard Troops:
Lizards are a new troop type only available through Mercenaries. They have an OP of 12 and DP of 9. Their base cost is $5000 and their networth multiplier is 8. Their attack type is Cannibal Attack. (it's just a name, nothing special about it. =p) They can be used in any location, and they are also used in Standard attacks. You can also sell them on the Market or aid them to others.

Tears of All Oceans:
This is the land farm account that allows a clan to move to the Pearl Holder location. It starts out with 10,000 land, and every time it is killed, it is automatically reborn again with 10,000 land. Land can be dropped to it if you are in the Pearl Holder location, but it can't receive aid.
