Title: Video Games
Post by: Firetooth on April 12, 2013, 12:21:29 PM
Seeing as this is the board for a game, we should probably have a video game thread to talk about all the latest video game happenings and just general discussion. Let's start with your favourite games! I'll post some of mine:

Anyone here have a Steam Account?

Pokemon Silver ftw!

Sharp has a steam account. I also convinced him to get a GOG one so we could buy a bunch of old school RPG's. There was a sale on where you got:

Baldur's gate + Tales of the Sword Coast expansion
Baldur's gate II + Throne of Bhaal expansion
Planescape: Torment
Neverwinter nights
Neverwinter nights 2
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale II
Another two or so games I can't remember and probably won't play

All for $21, so around £15. So I'm currently playing the original Baldur's Gate.

Can ditto most of the things on Firefight's first picture list except the Deus Ex games; Never got around to playing them. Also didn't bother with the Walking Dead series and didn't like Total War very much, but I think the reason I didn't like the Total War games was because I've always been more interested in games where you're also building more interactively and fighting. Lots of people really liked Rome etc, though, and I can see why.

Should add the Dragon Age games to the list, I had a lot of fun with those, even though the second wasn't as good as the first. Still worth the price of admission, though, and the third one might turn out to be pretty alright.

All time favorite game remains Age of Empires II.

How do you feel about them rebooting the Mass Effect universe sans Commander Shepard?

Why is nobody mentioning starcraft 2?

Diablo II LOD was my go-to game for a long time, I had a silly number of characters. Don't think I'll bother with Diablo III since it doesn't have PvP. I liked AoE and I was really into Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 for a while as well. Basically I love RTS games and complex character-building games.

I enjoy MOBAs and some FPS games, like TF2, Dota 2, Half Life 2
in short, Valve games.

Deus Ex and Walking Dead are definitely worth playing. The original Deus Ex is hideous now and has some hit-and-miss VO and does feel outdated, but is still brilliant. The new one is probably better if you can't handle that stuff, but you're a 90's kid, right? :p As for the Walking Dead, it's basically a Bioware game without combat, and more bugs. Personally, I really enjoyed it, and think it deserves all those 80's and 90's on metacritic.

I've always though Dragon Age: Origins was kind of overrated. Bland aesthetics and dull combat. Though I still enjoyed it, it just has too much padding in the middle and is too derivative. Looks like Dragon Age III will be much better in this regard, as all the concept art looks great. Oh, and Frostbite III means much better graphics. As for Dragon Age II, it's fun with some great characters. I like the whole "Mage oppression" plotline more than the "save the world" from the original, but the execution is weak.

Age of Empires II is sooo good. I'm excited for the re-release.

As for Mass Effect sans Shepard, I'm not nearly as mad as some people are. Shepard was a good protagonist, but I don't want him to become some "Master Chief" figure where the game universe is unable to progress without him/her. I'll miss Shepard, but they got a great send off with the Citadel DLC, and who knows, maybe I can have a Turian protagonist in the next ME game. I'd love a Mass Effect: Origins deal, what with chosing from a Krogan mercenary to a Turian politician as your origin.

Also, I am now about 3 hours into Baldur's Gate. It's an...enlightening experience. Everybody keeps dieing, I think the Temple priests probably are pretty happy when they see my party coming their way. :(

4. actually really fun despite the fact that I occasionally get sick of it since the whole thing is so...anime heavy.

Post by: windhound on June 08, 2013, 11:27:06 AM
From what's been released so far, the Xbox One is just disappointing.
It basically removes most of the reasons I like console gaming.  With the 360 I can buy used games dirt cheap, and when I finish them I can give the disk to one of my brothers and they can play it.  If I want it back no worries, just put the game in and it works fine.

Years later if I want to play one of my old games just start the console and it'll work.  The multiplayer may disappear, but the single player games will play fine.  When they take the Xbox One servers offline what happens?  Forced obsolescence?  Will they release a patch so the console doesn't require the 24 hour check in?  Just... icky.

I've got a reasonably decent computer, but I have to reboot into Windows to play most games (I did do this for Skyrim).  With Valve building their linux-based SteamBox maaybe eventually I won't have to.
Sony has been somewhat quiet about the PS4, here's hoping they don't follow the same dumb path.

I completely agree with you three. Sean's building a gaming PC atm, that should serve most our next-gen needs. Hopefully quite a few titles will go cross gen, for example games like Dragon Age with a save import.

Mass Effect is soo good. Set it to easy if you're a noob. Also, the second one is the best. At least go through the first on casual so you can there. In the third game, there's a "story" mode for super-noobs so youkill everybody in a shot or w/e.

Good point there. E3 is where it all happens. There's supposedly 15 Xbox One exclusive launch titles, and I hear Sony are showing up to 40 games.

I'm just as excited for EA's conference a day before E3, because Dragon Age III will finally be shown! Probably some other titles as well.

It doesn't matter what setting I have it on I still die. The controls suck. My team mates suck. I cant open doors. But mostly I just get shot. :'(

Define: Beat Skyrim
I've got a good 120 hours on my character and there's still open quests.

Mass Effect is a fun series, I've only played through the first two.  Been meaning to pick up the third, nice thing now is its dirt cheap because most everyone is done with it.

But yeah...  E3 should be interesting.  I never saw any compelling games for the Kinect on the 360, I guess now that they're forcing it other games may try to use it.  The fact that you can't disconnect it is ever-so-slightly creepy

Bring Wrex and Ashley if you suck, they have the most health. Wrex is a complete boss. As for getting shot, use cover. Mass Effect is easy-sauce compared to some games.

@Windy, make sure you pick up the free extended cut DLC before you play through Mass Effect 3. It patches over some of the issues with the now-infamous ending. The Citadel and Leviathan DLC's are also great but, as with all DLC's, are pretty expensive.

And Kinect may be good one day, but atm it's still a gimmick. M$oft also patented some pretty creepy tech in relation to privacy and kinect, though I can't remember the details.

Also:

PS4=  £350, lets you play used games
Xboxone = £430, doesn't let you played used games

The exchange rates for both are very unfair. We brits are getting charted £100 more for xboxone then we should.

The game is very good, despite too much auto-dialouge. And the ending Oh, and EDI.  :P Still, the majority is very strong and there are two brilliant plot arcs. What bit are you up to atm?

Also, I know I said earlier I didn't actually like Dragon Age: Origins that much, but I'm enjoying it a lot more on replay. I'm tempted to do a "evil dwarf supremacist" at some point. Lots of potential to be evil, murder knife ftw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGDL-hXZt5Q).
Title: Re: Video Games
Post by: Ashyra Nightwing on June 12, 2013, 09:37:11 AM
I don't actually think the whole EDI is that awful - I mean I did laugh when I first saw robo boobies but the way people have been talking about it I was expecting waaaaay worse (video games fans on the internet overreacting - no way)

I've been playing a lot of original playstation 1 games recently (big difference in graphics) so my overall reaction to ME3 is basically 'whoa man they can do that in video games now????'

I've just got Tali back, if that's any clue as to where I am? How far would you say I am through the game? I really have no idea
Title: Re: Video Games
Post by: Firetooth on June 12, 2013, 10:02:48 AM
I still liked her, but she her character arc is much better in ME2. The one thing she did not need was a body. ME3 is a game that's to unfairly criticized, but that doesn't mean there aren't some legit flaws. Still, EDI is not all bad.

Lol, the graphics in ME3 are considered average at best by most. Or, that is, most PC gamers. :P To be fair, I'm yet to see a game most people all agree has great graphics that hasn't been modded a load. Maybe Battlefield 3 for PC? Aesthetics>Graphics, anyway. Mass Effect has one of my favourite aesthetic styles. Just like the recent Deus Ex shows, a good aesthetic style is far more important than a good graphic style. But hey, maybe I'm bias because two of my three favourite games of all time were released 9 years+ ago.

You're around, in fact probably past, halfway, the game is a lot shorter than the others. Still, whilst Tuchanka is the highlight of the game (Mordin!), the Rannoch arc is almost as awesome. Still plenty of good things ahead. :)

A spoiler below for those who haven't played ME3, highlight and copy-paste to read!

Did you let Mordin cure the genophage? I did on my main playthrough, but my femshep wouldn't allow a genophage cure. You can actually convince him to fake his own death and sabotage the cure, but not if Eve/Wrex are still alive (Eve was still alive, I had Wreav in this playthrough). I shot him in the back, then was so disgusted with myself I haven't been able to finish the save file.

Also, video game music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=m4CdLgfMxQ0). I wanna play this and the last of us, but no money. :(

That's too bad. I've played III, IV, and V, and V is by far my favorite. No more unit stacking, for one thing - wars are so much more interesting than the old doomstack.

Coolio. I'm not sure if I'll like the limited resources thing, even though it makes sense.

I just finished Remember Me. Fun game with an engaging plot, great world, superb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFZ9oQItl2M) soundtrack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2nZCIJpLRM) and great protagonist. I really enjoy the memory remix sections, though these were disappointingly rare. There was plenty of room for improvement in terms of linearity of the game and repetitiveness of combat, and the game was also disappointingly short considering the price of video games atm.

Also finished Enslaved: Odyssey to the West last month. Another good story-driven game, with the likes of Andy Serkis and Alex Garland involved. Doing a bit of Rome: Total War as well, in anticipation for the sequel. As Carthage, I've curb stomped Spain and Numidia and am now advancing towards Rome. >:D

So I know I've posted the HumbleBundle several times already in this thread and its had good coverage on various websites (reddit etc), but this one is really good - https://www.humblebundle.com/

8 games: Dead Space 3, Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, Burnout Paradise, Medal of Honor, Mirror's Edge, The Sims 3, and Battlefield 3.  For five dollars.  The first six for as little as one.

I'm having fun with Burnout Paradise atm.
Debating if I want to make room for BF3, the install is nearly 20GB

Play dragon eternity. Half Facebook type RPG, half scam with incompetent admins who look to get as muh money as possible out of players.
