Title: Olympics
Post by: The Lady Shael on August 08, 2016, 09:00:49 PM
Anyone else watching the Olympics? Favorite sports to watch?

I half expected this to be a UMD topic when I saw the title.

UMD...almost forgot about that forum.

Normally I am glues to the set for the Olympics. This year I have not as of yet got the bug to watch. I like the individual sports. Like track and field or gymnastics.

Almost thought that was a Zika joke......

I typically watch gymnastics but am now limited to 50 GB of data a month (I live in the sticks and have satellite, so tv watching is very limited.) Monitoring online is what I have to do this year.

I'm vaguely paying attention, if only to be able to converse coherently with my co-workers. To be honest, I'm way more amped about football finally coming back. I was getting so desperate, I was watching CFL games.

Did anyone run into the inexplicably placeds goalpost? Because that's a thing in the CFL.

Ha, I spent a full minute trying to find it in the UMD board....

I watched the opening ceremony, the projections were cool. Although I'm not really getting the whole climate change agenda from a host city where 80% of their sewage runs untreated into the ocean......

Post by: Gen. Volkov on August 09, 2016, 09:18:30 PM
Yes, like twice, and I was like wat. The CFL is weird.

Juska, they really suck at regular old pollution, but like 80% of their vehicles run on ethanol. So you know, its a mixed bag.

The other 20% run on motorbike stickups and child labor.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Gen. Volkov on August 09, 2016, 09:35:34 PM
Accurate. Child labor is carbon neutral though.

Glad you guys could clear that one up for me.

What is this? Do I sense... sarcasm??? Juska, you wound me so. Here I am, conversing with you in good faith, and you take my comments askance? Oh woe! Travail! Travesty! To think I am so untrusted! I am cut to the quick! Wounded with no hope of healing!

;p
Title: Re: Olympics

Quite the contrary Volkov. The revelation that child labor is carbon neutral has changed my entire worldview.
Title: Re: Olympics

I'm here to help. :P

Anyway, back to the weirdness of the CFL, that whole "wide receivers can get a running start" rule about movement before the snap drives me nuts. It must drive the refs nuts too, because it literally always seems like they are offsides. Also, I guess the defenses have developed ways to to combat it, but I honestly can't see the value of running the ball in the CFL. Your wideouts are hitting the line of scrimmage at full speed, so the defensive backs can't jam them, and they basically are always getting a free release. That's a quaterbacks dream right there.

This thread is does not have much olympics in it.

Is anyone else getting sick of this Michael Phelps BS?

Never!! MURICA
Title: Re: Olympics

I'm sick of pretty much every aspect of NBC's Olympic coverage. It is absolutely godawful.

That said, I still want Phelps to win all the medals. Because 'MURICA.

I think Aussieland came in second in the women's relay? That's better than not medaling at least.

I mean, when he was shooting laser beams from his eyes at Chad le Clos....Red, white and blue right there folks
Title: Re: Olympics

Watching him beat Le Clos was so satisfying. And the #phelpsface memes have been kinda amusing.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Genevieve on August 11, 2016, 09:58:22 PM
I mean we're not terrible, but before every Olympics they're like "Australia are gonna win soooo many golds, we are favourites to win in allll these swimming events", and then we win like 2, and the rest of the "favourites" bomb out.

I was shocked China was beat by Russia in women's gymnastics

It really was, after Le Clos ran his mouth so much. Yeah, the Phelps death stare was the best. I tried to use it a bit ago, but my tablet-fu is not strong.

Also China didn't win gold in one of the synchronized diving events, first time since '04, leading to this awkward hug by the Great Britain team: http://www.nbcolympics.com/sites/default/files/styles/951x536_rectangle/public/field_image/10August2016/great-britain-laugher-mears-celebreate.jpg?itok=_Fq1pRdh

That's literally a perfect description of any NBC Olympics broadcast where the US is not actually favored to win. Its awful.

I think it's because NBC makes their montages ahead of time.

Don't worry Lucy, even if Australia is bad@sports you still get the benefit of Michelle Jenneke being everyones favorite runner.

Briar, you are probably correct.
Title: Re: Olympics

That's true. Also our swimmers only won one gold in London, and we've got three this year. So we're improving!

I mean, when the average child has to swim really fast to avoid (insert multitude of deadly sea creatures here) while enjoying the beach, I would imagine that it creates a class of super swimmers from which at least a few will eventually go on to become famous olympians.

I had to wikipedia what happened to the ol Thorpedo and it is kind of a sad tale. RIP Ian.

Sidenote: Racewalking is my new favorite Olympic sport. I've heard of it but never seen it till now.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Kilkenne on August 12, 2016, 08:47:12 PM
Then you haven't seen Modern Pentathlon, have you? That is the best sport.
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: The Lady Shael on August 12, 2016, 09:05:18 PM
I have not heard of that but it also sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out.

Have you seen racewalking though?? It looks so ridiculous. And for what? The glory of being the fastest walker in the world?
Title: Re: Olympics
Post by: Kilkenne on August 12, 2016, 09:36:25 PM
"There are two rules that govern racewalking.[4][5] The first dictates that the athlete's back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched. Violation of this rule is known as loss of contact. The second rule requires that the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes directly over it. These rules are judged by the unaided human eye."

That's awesome. I wonder who just decides to do that one day. Pentathlon is even worse in some ways, but racewalking is quite the sport

If there's one thing I know, it's that Australians are always drunk.

Also, I can not believe you haven't heard of race walking! The bane of the Australian athletics team's existence, since the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Jane Saville had the gold medal in sight, when just before she entered her home town stadium, she was disqualified for "illegal gait"! After collapsing in tears at the finish line, she asked for a gun to shoot herself.

I'm now convinced that literally everyone in the world of swimming has a little statue of Michael Phelps that they pray too every night before they go to bed. The guy who just beat Phelps to win gold in the 100m butterfly was gushing about what a huge fan of Phelps he is.

I literally just found that race-walking was a thing because of this thread.

We won the modern pentathlon! Probably the event with the most useful skills... if you're a 19th century cavalry soldier.

Lochte got drunk and did something stupid. That's understandable. What makes him a complete tool is the BS story he spun afterwards. I have no respect for that guy.

Yay Straya! You guys also got bronze in shotput.
