I assumed he was coded to be killed very easily once he was broken....

Would be very hard just in terms of hits to kill him (and thereby end the defense boost) otherwise with the hit limit.

From the news search it looks like he's given up big amounts of land at every hit (lowest was 394) maybe every attack under 20k was a capture, but idk.

past emperor didnt have land boosted losses. Though I suppose it's possible. Shael?

I think Shadow might be right, it sounds like something to do with capture, though I'd need more testing to be done before that can be confirmed.
