News Search is helpful, it's better than espoianging I think anyway. (though it uses no turns).

It's a good tool to find out what attacks others have used against the horde. You can see which attacks have been successful and make a good prediction on how much success you're gonna have.
It's useful when you can't espioniage.
Plus it doesn't waste turns. Everyone's beating my score! *sniff*
I use it, but not much. I mostly espionage, even though it wastes my loyalty and turns, but I've never had an unsuccessful espionage yet....

Plus, if you get an anonymous spell, you can News Search to find out who attacked you. (~Bitter experience insert here~).
