Title: Achievements
Post by: Firetooth on August 18, 2011, 12:50:50 PM
Not sure if this has been suggested before, but achievements are pretty "hip" at the moment on web-based games (or any games, really) and it could be a good way to encourage people to try different things.

I'd suggest it would work best on reg, simply because it would be frustrating losing all your achievements each round, plus the slower turn rate would make it take far longer to achieve some of the said things.

There could be a few minimal rewards for completing things, as well as shiny badges. A few possible examples below

Quote
Dibbun no more
Leave protection- 25mil cash reward

Specialist
Have 90% or more of your buildings in one structure type. -5bil cash reward

Happy pony raiser
Use turns five times without attacking once. -500million food reward

Loyalist
Stay active for fifty days -10bil cash reward

Warrior Cat Enthusiast
Use Wildcat's pressgang spell 500 times -6mil net in any troop type of choice as a reward

Team player
Join, or create, a clan -500 land

Champion Skiff Racer
Win 5 skiffs races -2.5bil cash
I'm sure other people can think of more inventive achievements and titles.

They'd mainly be aimed at newbies, and I think would be a relatively simple (if gimmicky) way to encourage people to keep playing, and to try different things, even a good way to encourage figuring out strategies (putting 90% buildings in one structure). Any different opinions? I think it would appeal to a lot of people and can't see many downsides as long as the rewards are kept small enough to only really benefit smaller empires. It would also reward players who stick around in the long run.

Why not suggest your own achievements? View the below link.

jack of all trades
become atleast 4 different races and run a full 450 turns on each - 5b cash

would help newbs understand more about each race.

also i like the idea, would benefit those who need it most.

This is something that has definitely been brought up before (http://www.redwallwarlords.com/forums/index.php?topic=12606.0), and I absolutely support this idea, whether it's for purely cosmetic purposes or not.

It wouldn't be hard to code either. It just hasn't been high on the priority list, but maybe if there's enough support and push from you guys we'll think a lot more about putting it in.

I like the idea of one-time rewards, rather than long term ones, along with a shiny

Yes, I think there should be a page for achievements and also you can get them more than once.

I don't like the achievements idea, because it takes away from the main focus of the game.

It's just an incentive to try new things, it's mostly for beginners. A lot of games use the model now, because it gives a sense of reward and encourages you to keep playing to get more.

I'm normally not a fan of achievements, but I'm not against it if they are used to help get people over the learning curve. Basically, some structure to suggest various strategies. I think it would be best if achievements worked on only turbo. For example:

1. Get 100 mil rats
2. Get 100 mil weasels
3. Get 50 mil stoats
4. Get 50 mil skiffs
5. Get 25 bil $ in one sale at the mercs
6. Get 20 bil food
7. Get 5 mil workers (or something like that)
8. Possess 70% of the land in the game
9. Finish your run with 50k towers
...
stuff like that. We'd categorize it by major strategy and suggest that they could get a whole group all at once. Maybe have tiers so there's nobody getting discouraged (level 1: 50k stoats. level 2: 500k stoats. level 3: 5 mil stoats. level 4: 50 mil stoats. Maybe even a 500 mil stoats category, to give the veterans something to reach for too)
