What factors change an attack result?

 I used espionage on someone, and using my computer calculator, I found I had the following offense higher than my opponents defense...
1283990 (skiffs total o advantage)
1609766 (stoats total o advantage)
1848433 (rats total o advantage)
The highest is obviously the rats, but it was repelled.
Guards affect the result, but by how much?
And, what else is involved?
I'm fairly sure this was more than a 5% advantage, I haven't worked it out, though.

 Guards, as has been said in the Guide, are worth 500 Defense points. Also, you have not factored in allied defense.

 Raised defenses don't actually raise defenses, but decrease troop loss.
