General Discussion / Update
March 13, 2015, 01:41:08 PM
Hey ghost of RWL community!

Can you believe that RWL is my homepage and that I've never actually logged out, even though I haven't gone past the main page in years...

I'm doing my MA in Sociology and Digital Humanities right now, writing my thesis on League of Legends, I'm married and I have two kids.

Does anyone play LoL?

OK bye now!

General Discussion / RWL Match games
August 28, 2013, 09:46:49 AM
What do y'all think about this...

1v1 Match games:

You can start a match and invite your opponent. Turns are used 1 at a time, back and forth (like chess). If the other player takes a long time using their turn, you get an extra turn.

It would be a very slow paced match, but only relative to normal RWL gameplay. If you really think about it, this kind of game would mean that every single turn you use is important. Everyone would have to be thinking way ahead, and will have to micro like crazy.

You could be playing more then 1 match at a time.

You could also do 2v2, with 4 players, or with 2 players and 2 NPC's.

And it might also help if we designed a mobile version of RWL so people could play match games when they're out and about.

General Discussion / A Puzzle
March 04, 2013, 04:11:14 PM
Hey so I can get some extra points by solving this puzzle. It probably has something to do with alternate reality games (not sure if you know what those are). I suck at puzzles though, so if anyone of you folks wanna take a crack at it, here's the image:

OH, the prof posted it to his blog too, and he leaves even more clues in the comments section: http://www.3812.graeworks.net/2013/03/04/what-i-found-in-a-defunct-email-account-with-the-subject-help/

General Discussion / I totally still think about you!
February 04, 2013, 11:54:39 PM
RWL! I love you. I just never get to see you anymore. I'm a busy guy - work, school, family... *sigh*

Anyway. I'm taking this really awesome Digital History class, which is all about games. This week I had to do a blog entry, and the prof gets /really/ impressed with the blog entries that get a lot of hits. PLEASE GO READ THE POST I MADE ABOUT RWL: http://goo.gl/efXYK

And post on the blog if you like (positive stuff, please!) Feel free to talk about whether you think RWL has been educational for you.

Development / How to Help Develop RWL
April 10, 2012, 08:02:58 AM
When posting your suggestions for the game you must:
1. Write in complete sentences.
2. Explain what the problem is in detail.
3. Be specific.
4. Explain your solution(s) in detail.
5. Be specific.
6. Give us suggestions without being condescending.
8. Expect differences of opinion.
9. Be realistic.

Here we go again folks. I'm glad that this time I'm going to start tracking on day 1. We'll get a clearer picture of things. As we all adjust to the new game dynamics I'm sure these reports are going to excite you folks as much as they excite me.

Total Posted Since Last Cost to buy out Net Growth Average Prices
Rats 199,999 N/A $129,999,350 N/A $650
Stoats 4,929,245 N/A $7,587,288,984 N/A $1,539
Weasels 1,907,402 N/A $1,941,263,091 N/A $1,018
Skiffs 745,276 N/A $1,888,355,848 N/A $2,534
Food 400,779,406 N/A $6,810,911,681 N/A $17
Market Total $37,170,830
$18,357,818,954 N/A

Off to a good start. Prices aren't as high as I expected to be. I suppose the indies off the start are eager to sell their troops and are not expecting there to be anyone rich enough to pay a premium. Lets wait and see if anyone goes for an early land lock which will effect market prices...

Turbo Discussion / Turbo Turn Rate
March 12, 2012, 12:06:41 PM
Is anyone strongly opposed to changing the turn rate to 4 turns every 10 minutes.

Here's why I want to do it. Currently you get full turns every 18 hours, which means that if you are trying not to waste a single turn, you have to run 6 hours earlier every day.

That means some days you run twice, once you have 150 turns stored.

The result is that the top ranking players are in reality simply the players who are less busy, and spend all their time camping the computer. I've noticed a few doing that this round (sevs does it every round).

They run more then anyone else, they get 2 runs in before we get 1. So they win. I don't think that's fair.

If we switch to 4 turns, then we will get full turns every 23 hours, which means you if you run at the same time every night, you will lose 1 hours worth (30) turns every day. Those who make perfect use of their turns will hardly be more then 1 run ahead by the end of the round.

Let me know if you are strongly disagreeing.

Polling / Maple Syrup
March 11, 2012, 08:48:19 AM
Any self-respecting Canadian knows the difference between real maple syrup and the fake stuff (table syrup). But apparently you yanks don't make a proper distinction between the two. So before you answer this poll, you have to find out if you're using the REAL stuff. Putting fake maple syrup on doesn't count.

How to tell:

Taste... But you may not know what the real stuff tastes like, so that doesn't work. Table syrup is sickly sweet, while maple syrup is strong, powerful and perfect tasting. Maple syrup is universally loved - table syrup is not.

Price... Real maple syrup is super expensive, especially outside of my county here in Canada which calls itself the "maple syrup capital of the world."  Which is actually why i'm asking, because I use maple syrup a lot and realized the rest of the world might rarely use it.

Ingredients... real maple syrup has only 1 ingredient: pure maple syrup.

Turbo Discussion / Hidden Fox's Market Report
March 07, 2012, 03:35:25 PM
Yet another great service from your favorite passive player. I am going to regularly give reports on the market.

In 3.0 the market is one of the most important features in the game. It is the best way to maintain an end-game. It serves as an indicator for how the game is doing. But it's hard to keep an eye on who exactly is dominating the market, especially right now because the market is crazy flooded

[edit] Now with non-fictitious numbers!

Total PostedCost to buy out

Rats 47,687,54521,557,673,553

Stoats 35,770,28356,594,082,494

Weasels 28,788,53924,505,875,330

Skiffs 23,050,45356,926,122,455

Food 2,663,845,53837,597,266,346

Cost to buy out the market right now: $197,181,020,178

Break down:
Rat prices are currently going up. They were down to 320 yesterday, but today they're almost at 400. There are not many rats on the market right now.
Currently it looks like The Equinox of 2012 (#4) has the most rats up there, all of which are priced quite high. #9's high price decision may be because of neglect, or he/she may be planning to sell things later in the game for a late-in-the-race boost.

Weasels are plentiful right now. Not many players seem to be building a defense, so that probably explains the lack of sales. They are being sold for very little. Again, The Equinox of 2012 (#4) seems to be dominating the market on weasels, but most people are selling for significantly less, at 800.

Stoats are the hottest market right now. They are being sold for 1,389, but the bulk of them cost more then 1435. Again, The Equinox of 2012 (#4) is the big seller, and the best deals are comin' from Shadow (Passive) (#17) and IceCream (#16).

skiffs are very overpopulated on the market right now. I suspect they are being used to pad people's NW, but then folks realize they are costing a lot and market them. They are a very low price though, and one day soon somebody is likely to buy them up for defense.

Lots of food on the market right now. Mostly passive-sold, and at a really good price. So I would encourage anyone to go ahead and stop building foragers - at this price it's better to use the market for your food.

Overall the market is still very flooded. it has been this way all round, and I would love to hear comments as to why people think that is. Shadow and I both suspect it is because too many people are playing indy intead of casher strat.

General Discussion / City Name Game
March 06, 2012, 06:29:00 PM
We're going to make some pre-made city names for the game. So lets play a game that will help make the city names!

Everyone posts 1 section of the name.

If you have completed the city name, write the full name.

Example:

First Poster says:
Field
second poster says:
ing
third poster chooses to end the word:
scry
Feildingscry

I'll start us off with the first prefix:

Turbo Discussion / A Huge Success - A Huge Thank You
February 28, 2012, 06:50:22 PM
RWL3.0 was a massive success.

Never have game balances been so successful, so precise, and so beneficial to the game.

Before I thank the folks who made it happen, I'd like to say very briefly why this is such an amazing development for RWL. I served as the developer for many years (6, maybe more? Ionno). During this time I tried disparately to balance the game. I took input, I made plans... Any admin here (especially windy) can attest that I had a lot of plans. But those plans rarely came to life. The changes I did make were sometimes good, sometimes bad, but they always involved a rocky period of instability and change.

Shadow took my spot, and has since been doing an excellent job. This change has balanced the game. It has created new, nuanced styles of gameplay, and it has been one of the biggest, best advancements to RWL - and to Promisance as a whole. The bumps we've had to iron out have been very, very minor, and are part of the regular process. Meanwhile RWL has become the most balanced, enjoyable game it's ever been.

So I've made this topic so that we can thank the folks who made this happen, and so we can all talk about how much we appreciate the new game.

I would like to thank:

Shadow
- RWL3.0 was brought to you by the calculated, panoptic mind of Shadow. His fundamental understanding of the game, at a root, mathematical level, gave us something that is robust and balanced. I can see his hand on this game because I've known him for years. Every time I've spoken to him about a concept in the game, he has either thought of it before, or immediately understands what I'm talking about. He has a mind for concepts, and has applied it to this game. It was no small effort, so I think we all owe him a huge thank you.

Kilk
- From what I understand it was Kilks determination that brought this project forth. He pushed it every step of the way, encouraging the development team to keep at it. This is the kind of thing I was missing when I was the developer: and my treasure chest of unaccomplished great idea's is proof of that. Kilks value was his ability to push this project forward.

Shael
- The gal can code, what can I say. Even with her time constraints she managed to help us implement something great.

windy
- windy is the Wizard who wills websites to work. He's also always available, always dependable, and he totally doesn't eat fish.

Beta Testers
- We had a buncha beta testers. I donno who they all were, but they are also worthy of our thanks. Their input no doubt made this round a smooth success.

Everyone thank the folks above for their hard work!

News / Updates / RWL is moving hosts
February 14, 2012, 04:08:49 PM
Today I purchased server space with a new hosting company. So our servers will now be with A Small Orange.

The domain name for the website (redwallwarlords.com) will be changed to point to our new servers. So that means there will be some downtime in the next 7 days as it gets transferred.

So expect that within the next week RWL will be down for anywhere between a few hours, to a day.

It's for the best though, because the new host will most likely be way better. Also, they have more up-to-date technology, so we will be able to set things up so that your forum account logs you into the games (no more signing into reg and turbo, just 1 sign in on the forums).

We are also going to update the forums while we're at it. You may not notice much of a change except that we will lose our forum theme, and things will feel generally slicker.

Yay!

Every now and then there is a conflict that slips it's way into my mind. I can't seem to stop it from creeping into my thoughts and creating a dissonance. It is all because of the relationship between Warlord and Horde on RWL. This is a conflict that occurs because of the origins of the game, and if you don't know those then I will explain them in brief:

In 2002 few people got together and modified an open source game called Promisance to fit the Redwall theme. Promisance is a game where you create and control an empire. On Redwall, how ever, you create a Warlord... The game mechanics are basically the same, but instead of calling it your "empire" they called YOU a Warlord.

So wait, when I create a turbo account, is it a warlord, or is an empire? Is it a single character, or an empire? It bothers me that this isn't clear, and I don't know why!

You are asked to create a warlord name, and pick a race. So you would assume that this warlord is therefor the leader of an empire. So are the race statistics descriptive of the type of warlord you are? Do some warlords somehow produce more defense then others?

I'm not very good at the abstract, so I made a diagram of my dilemma:

As you can see, you could just as easily be creating a horde with a name and a race... Just everyone in your horde is 1 race. Then the assumption is that when you call the game Redwall: Warlords that YOU yourself are the warlord: The warlord is right there sitting in a chair in front of a computer. And you are commanding a horde. So I would be the Warlord Ollie, commanding the horde named Hidden Fox... But then are you creating a horde, or a warlord??

Let me know what you think.

News / Updates / Sevs Gagged Again
February 07, 2012, 08:54:18 PM
We want people on these forums to feel safe, happy, and welcomed. That cannot happen when people are being rude, violent, and antagonistic. We want everyone to know where the line is, and Sevs has once again crossed it.

General Discussion / You're a complainer when....
February 04, 2012, 11:51:58 AM
The trick to being cool on RWL, these days, is to make sure that you aren't a complainer. It occurred to me that many people could benifit from a helpful set of guidelines to help you avoid being a RWL complainer. So if you're ready, follow the instructions below and you will be well on your way to being the coolest chap on the forums!

If you disagree with someone:

If you solve your problems without threats:

If you talk without being a boastful arrogant stoat's-behind:

If you make posts like this one:

Well, are you ready to post without complaining?

Turbo Discussion / Sevs is such a nic~ hey wait what?
February 03, 2012, 10:53:29 PM
QuoteMy dear subjects, I have reduced the tax on the people and this run I deliberately did not take anyone's land.
As a testament to the passive hierarchy I request everyone does their part to kill the terrorist known as Sharptooh.

Well that's awfully nice of you Sevs. How odd that later the very same day, with the help of your allies, you scraped up all that land anyway... I don't mind, I scout for every acre I have. But you aren't seriously trying to pretend you're being a nice guy, are you?

General Discussion / RWL at its Best
February 02, 2012, 08:59:06 AM
(skip to the bold if you want to avoid my ramblings and get straight to the point)

Every now and then a wave of nostalgia crosses over me. RWL is awesome. I've been here since 2003, which makes this one of my longest, least neglected hobbies. Until just recently the game had grown into somewhat of a ritual for me. But the community is always growing and changing.

RWL fills a space in my life. It is the reason I don't feel the urge to blog or tweet. Why would I seek the attention of the world en mass when I have a collection of great people right here who are already vaguely interested in what I have to say!

One thing that has always impressed me about RWL is how sheltered it is from other influences on the internet. Sure, we have indulged in memes, and all different types of culture have pervaded these forums, but none have overcome the RWL spirit. Therefor I propose that we attempt to summarize the spirit of these forums with a collection of topics that show it well.

I'll get the ball rolling:

I pick the recent Hello! topic, which was so overwhelmingly welcoming I worried Daniel would never make a second post (and thus bum out half the forum).
