Spa Room 101 / So I just did this
April 21, 2014, 10:45:28 PM

Seriously.  This 'game.'
I'm going to have to go back with a better ship and pick them up, the return part of the craft was destroyed when I ran out of fuel to slow down the final decent.  But.  They made it!

Spa Room 101 / Poor chickens.
March 22, 2014, 08:54:59 PM
Heard a crash last night, tree branch came down and got the coop :(

The 'branch' that got it

Amazingly it only killed two chickens out of the 10 that were in there, probably the ones roosting directly below where it hit.  Roof system is totally trashed (obviously) but the box survived remarkably well.  Knocked one side panel down a few inches and sank the support leg on the opposite side, used a bottle jack to put it back in place.
It wasn't in my schedule today to put a new roof on it so I ran by the hardware store, picked up some metal braces, and repaired what I could.  Its ugly but functional, will keep the rain off them until I have time to decide what to do with it.  Its about time for a bigger coop anyways.

October 29, 2013, 10:12:23 PM
Urg.  So my '70 Beetle is almost drivable
Sorta dreading dealing with other drivers while I learn how to drive stick with it.

CafePress has car magnets on sale for $2.50 or so, made this

Probably won't help much, but 's fair warning to other drivers.  She's slow and for the love of all things good plz don't stop inches from my bumper on a hill

General Discussion / Today I Learned
September 09, 2013, 03:56:19 PM
Post random facts and stories here.

First off:

"In Unix systems, there's a program named "login". login is the code that takes your username and password, verifies that the password you gave is the correct one for the username you gave, and if so, logs you in to the system.

For debugging purposes, Thompson put a back-door into "login". The way he did it was by modifying the C compiler. He took the code pattern for password verification, and embedded it into the C compiler, so that when it saw that pattern, it would actually generate code that accepted either the correct password for the username, or Thompson's special debugging password. In pseudo-Python:

    def compile(code):
        if (looksLikeLoginCode(code)):
            generateLoginWithBackDoor()
        else:
            compileNormally(code)

With that in the C compiler, any time that anyone compiles login, the code generated by the compiler will include Ritchie's back door.

Now comes the really clever part. Obviously, if anyone saw code like what's in that example, they'd throw a fit. That's insanely insecure, and any manager who saw that would immediately demand that it be removed. So, how can you keep the back door, but get rid of the danger of someone noticing it in the source code for the C compiler? You hack the C compiler itself:

    def compile(code):
        if (looksLikeLoginCode(code)):
            generateLoginWithBackDoor(code)
        elif (looksLikeCompilerCode(code)):
            generateCompilerWithBackDoorDetection(code)
        else:
            compileNormally(code)

What happens here is that you modify the C compiler code so that when it compiles itelf, it inserts the back-door code. So now when the C compiler compiles login, it will insert the back door code; and when it compiles the C compiler, it will insert the code that inserts the code into both login and the C compiler.

Now, you compile the C compiler with itself – getting a C compiler that includes the back-door generation code explicitly. Then you delete the back-door code from the C compiler source. But it's in the binary. So when you use that binary to produce a new version of the compiler from the source, it will insert the back-door code into the new version.

So you've now got a C compiler that inserts back-door code when it compiles itself – and that code appears nowhere in the source code of the compiler. It did exist in the code at one point – but then it got deleted. But because the C compiler is written in C, and always compiled with itself, that means thats each successive new version of the C compiler will pass along the back-door – and it will continue to appear in both login and in the C compiler, without any trace in the source code of either."

Spa Room 101 / So I had a thought
June 13, 2013, 11:14:02 PM
I listened to the Harry Potter series audiobooks, read by Jim Dale (highly recommend)

Realized something towards the end, not really ground breaking or applicable to anything, but Dumbledore must have repaired Hagrid's wand with the elder wand after it was broken by the expelling authorities.
After Ron's wand broken -- accidentally, mind, so probably not as badly damaged as Hagrid's was when it was purposefully broken -- it couldn't perform the least bit of magic without  major crapouts.  Hagrid, on the other hand, despite not getting past, what, year 3 still didn't have any real issues using his pink umbrella.

http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Rubeus_Hagrid%27s_umbrella
That wiki only lists two incidents where Hagrid didn't perform the magic he meant to, the first could easily be explained by the fact that transfiguration is tremendously hard and Hagrid never finished his 3rd year.  The second explained by the fact that he was under severe pressure.
Everything other bit of magic he did without issue

Likely not an original theory, but hey.

Turbo Discussion / Couple minor changes

Hey guys
Taek went through and cleaned up the Construct and Cluny's Hut pages, I've updated Turbo with them.  Mostly clean up, but a few tweaks and additions as well.

Let me know if you notice anything unexpected, I poked them and they seem fine.

Reg Discussion / Vacationed Accounts -- Land Leak
April 15, 2013, 11:55:45 PM
Please note this upcoming change.

Land Leak
As implemented, it averages the land in the top ten to form a goal then checks all vacationed accounts.  If the vacationed account has more land than the goal .1% of the player's land is taken and given to the landfarm.  This is done every turn cycle until the vacationed player's land is less than the goal or the player comes out of vacation.

Normally changes that are made to Reg are reactionary, this is the case here.
Vacation abuse was much more prevalent on Turbo, never so much an issue on Reg.  That is, until a group of players took just about a million acres out on vacation.  Serio.

Jaffar, Angel of Death (#836)    466,654
Boris Johnson (#36)    304,697
My Networth Sucks :( (#788)    209,958

Those three accounts have gone into vacation in the past three weeks.  That's an incredible amount of land to suck out of the game, and it appears to be coordinated.  Vacationing for the express purpose of protecting your horde has generally been looked down on, but (afaik) was never really against the rules as its somewhat hard to enforce.
But still, come on guys.

I sent each of those players a note earlier this evening letting them know I plan to put the patch in place on Wednesday evening, so they have two days to come out if they'd like to save their land.
Again, this will only affect you if you go into vacation with more land than the average top ten player, and it will only take land in .1% increments until you are at average land or you break vacation.

The patch is written.  I'll review it again later and poke Shadow to give it a look as well.
Let me know if there's any questions or concerns.
Cheers guys
