I feel like audiobooks are the sort o' thing where it's oh-so important to have a good narrating voice, say, if someone like the late, great Tony Jay had more audiobooks under his belt; I'd be all over it.

For Earthsea, this'll be my first time going through it & am otherwise happy with the first book, but I think I'm a little more excited to get through Tombs of Atuan as it seems to have some elements that we, as a group, were left wanting for: more strong female characters, & perhaps a deeper exploration of some of the territories that seem such a blur in A Wizard of Earthsea.
Any folks who've read it (or other/similar works) feel free to chime in; but do you find that the series gets better as you read it? or might there be any suggestion to jump straight up to  Tales from Earthsea, et al?

Over quarantine, I'm happy to say I'd been able to finish 3 books I'd been meaning to get around to; considering I tend to collect books more than I read them. But recently my friends started up a lil book club where we designate some literature, then discuss & share our thoughts on the subject matter afterwards via videochat. Just finished A Wizard of Earthsea, my most recently acquired vice, & I'm personally excited to proceed with the next part of the series, unless this next one we opt for something with more mature themes, in contrast to the episodic, highly YA oriented read that is these early works of Le Guin.

so yeah, I feel like if there's anytime to pick up a very digestible, & especially whimsical story, it's definitely now -for those of us who do want to be more well read~

I figured a book would be a solid place to start~
Still keeping an eye out at the local Savers & second hand stores for at least one copy here; would make selling my friends on it via our book club that much easier :D

I remember in a similar game, "Tribal Wars", there was a dedicated scout unit (mounted on coursers), that were not invulnerable to attacks outside of "scouting attacks where the home units outnumber the enemy scouts sent.
Dunno how easy it would be to configure to include another unit, or whether having the leader/mage unit makes the scout concept redundant~

That's about inline with what I heard about Bioshock 2; I beat the first one handily, but the second one seemed like alot of effort for not much return, given watching my friend try & error to acquire some extra ADAM :X
Maybe I should just jump into Infinite? It does look a good deal o' fun~
Then again, there's also System Shock 2 which is much older, so maybe not quite as pretty, but I understand it's a pretty similar game by the same developer(s)

I remember hearing once that Cities were only ever a half-finished idea; perhaps we can make a concerted effort to tweak the mechanic to make it more relevant in the meta. Maybe not huge, abrupt changes, but perhaps some aspect adjustment that natively lowers the cost of holding units like rats or something~

I think when I first ran here, I went Magpie, because it was the closest thing to a duck :p
But I believe it had a pretty straight forward casher strat, overall easy to run, easy to recover health with it's tax evasion, but not strong in the long game :P

while I'm not terribly versed in effective, efficient Indy strats, to my understanding, it probably is the single most profitable one, followed closely by farming.
I remember being fond of Gremlining in the old days, & even here the Ferret seems a straight-forward means to increase net in the long game. So to do the latter, I think, is to micromanage & min-max less overall & thus complete runs quicker w/o sacrificing much long-game efficacy... Unless I'm overthinking the Indy strat? I tend to do that :P

Welcome back, it's been a lil sleepy lately (for me at least), but I'm sure the other guys here what-with their exceptional min-max skills will be thrilled to see someone worthy of competition ;)
Older veterans are occasional but they do appear when least expected, if you still have contact w/ any others, feel free to bug 'em to put in some turns :P

I'm kinda curious too; if I'd won at all, it probably was only once. Can't say I was gambling all that consistently; I maybe bought 3 tickets 1-3 times per week~

Strategy / The most underutilized Stategy

This technique which I do recall fondly being one of the most enjoyable aspects of this game (& very likely the only real reason I've ever lingered in the top rank for longer than a couple days), is the more abstract aspect that allows us to interact in-game.

  • Diplomacy
  • Foreign Aid
  • The Mailbox
You'd really be surprised at how much easier a game becomes if you simply find a buddy~
I'll shout out Ryu as an example (not that we gang up much, or anything), who'd up until today, was a completely otherwise anonymous empire/warlord on the roster, but I know if I actually send a message, he'll respond & we can organize some mutually beneficial agreement -if not stated outright.
& I believe this to be true for just about any other warlord, barring inactive vacationing kicks in. But while the flamewars of yesteryears may be long gone, those of us still in there, doing stupid things to make the Land Farm unbreakable or playing a war of attrition, I'd say we're still by & large very approachable & cordial. Any new folks who find themselves here; don't let the oldschool slugfest intimidate you, & If you hit some unbreakable wall, odds are, a solution could really be just a message away~
